I've gotten a good look at Galaxy Convoy and I swear to god he looks like Strike Gundam with those wings and big ass guns. Don't get me wrong his design is hot, am I the only one seeing this in a lot of the new Transformers toys ??
What do you guys think ??

GF Convoy looks NOTHING like Strike Gundam....

There's certainly more of a Japanese robot feel to a lot of the newer Transformers. That said, all of the originals were Japanese to begin with. Go figure.

Not really, no, don't see the resemblance.

Sure, Prime's got a face mask and is vaguely humanoid, and he's got a backpack. But beyond that, I don't see a resemblance.

The backpack/super mode module is way too bulky compared to the Strike Gundam's, from what I've seen of the strike Gundam anyhow.

In terms of looking like Japanese robots, there's really not much you can do with robots to make them THAT different from each other, short of making them 'freaks'.

Your standard giant robot has either a human face (sometimes complete with goatee) or a face mask, and is mostly humanoid shaped. Sometimes they have wings of some sort.

Other than that, it's just details. Short of being non-humanoid or freakish, most giant robots are about the same.

Take two humanoid robots at random. Say Powerglide and Mazinger Z. Both have face masks and similar eyes, though Mazinger's generally more detailed since he's not a supporting char. Mazinger's is also the low type mask that allows for a nose to be shown, while Powerglide's is a ninja type that only reveals the eyes and barely any nose, if any at all.

If you take away all the decorations, body wise, they're about the same. Though Powerglide does have a conehead and built in wings. Otherwise, it's really just decorations.

So I'm thinking... it's theme and details that really matter, not the vague similiarity. Powerglide is a mostly red fellow, Mazinger obviously ain't. Powerglide is rather bland looking in terms of body decorations. While Mazinger is black and has those funky crests on his chest that are rather distinctive.

Or Optimus has his trademark front truck chest etc.

So, no, see no resemblance with a Gundam for the most part. About as much resemblance as between a spider monkey and a hot chick really.

I think we're talking about different gundams here. Call me a nerd, but i think Agent2Man is referring to Freedom Gundam. I can see the resemblance in the cannons around the hip level.

Yeah, the hip-cannons are pretty reminiscent of the Freedom, and I can see where Agent2man gets the Gundam-ish vibe. I'm not sure if I see much of Strike Gundam in him, but the sharp angles, and the detailing, are rather like that of a Gundam design.

I'll have to get Galaxy Convoy before I can really say how much alike they are.

Nah, you're fishin'. Prime's got a different design aesthetic than the SEED series Gundams. With the hip and overhead cannons and the expanding wings, the Freedom resembles the Gundam Double X and the F91 a lot more than it does Galaxy Convoy.

Galaxy's more in the style of a Super Robot (Mazinger would be the classic example), but gussied up with lots of tech details. Modern comparisons would be from the recent Godannar and Gravion series. If you think about it, this interpretation of his design fits in with his sentai-inspired super mode from Energon.

Perhaps Prime were designed by gundam designers??

I will only go as far as saying that GF Prime/Convoy's design is Gundam-esque.

Energon Mirage and Sharkticon are Gundam-esque (hell, Sharkticon even has a fairly close approximation to the Gundam Astray's head, minus the V-Fin). Galaxy Convoy is not even close.

Although I'm constantly reminded of the Buster Gundam everytime a TF has hip cannons now (Sharkticon, Galaxy Convoy). But then the feeling passes quickly enough.

Might want to consider adding Bulkhead\Springer\Quickstrike to that list.

I think I should clarify...all I am saying is that Prime looks Gundam-esque only in the way that he is very sleek looking. Other than that I see no similarities.

I heard Gundam Seed is drawn by the people who created the anime "Cyber Formula" which is about car racing. And in the new GF line, Megatron's car mode, GD-04 & Nitro Convoy? Anyway, all their vehicle modes look just like Cyber Formula's racing cars... so it's possible... but for real, Prime is nothing like Strike Gundam, maybe F-91... but just the 2 big ass guns.

First off:

Optimus Prime in Galaxy Force, doesn't feel like a gundam when you look at him.
He looks like a friggin tank that is ready to take on the world if he has too.
In all honesty when I first saw the first designs for this Prime I thought he looked like Mazinger*Physalis made this point too lol* I think is the japanese robot that Agent2man is refering to because of the enormous wings on his back.

But those are WINGS...Prime's "wings" are the trailer skirts with the wheels...
AND the hip cannons from the Freedom gundam? Are not a new thing...
the F91 gundam*noticed Dreamer making this very point*(and with respect to the line of Gundam...these bots have been around as long as the Transformers you should look up the huge following to the series ) which predates SEED had hip cannons, but in all honesty who cares?

So ideas are borrowed from other shows, and incorporated...look at the original Jet Fire.
He pretty much was a Macross innovation cross-over...at least in the toys, in the show he was his own bot...but the transformation is nearly the same.

All I can say is this new Prime has the regal appearance of a leader
and the look of "Hey Megatron I like peace, but that doesn't mean I won't wipe the floor with your rear and smack you around like a sissy-bot" all rolled up into one.
