Sorry to dredge this up, but I just HAD to put in my two bits as far as TGTTM is concerned.
I actually enjoy the show. I think it's smart and entertaining. The only problem is, it really doesn't belong on adult swim, as evidenced by all but one of the testimonials here. It's way too out there for the demographic that adult swim is shooting for (as is Milk Chan, which is way too out there for even me).
Some of you may be familiar with Bob Odenkirk of Mr. Show fame. For those of you that are, you'll know that, for it's time Mr. Show was pretty out there. It infused Monty Python, early SNL, and a unique "counter-culture" perspective that was just too much for some people. You can watch some of the old shows on DVD, and in some of the sketches, jokes just fall FLAT. No laughs. And it's not because the jokes weren't funny, because they were. It's because Mr. Show was ahead of it's time. People just weren't ready for it, for that type of show, for that type of comedy. They are now, however. Many of you have seen Chappelle's Show on Comedy Central, and probably love it. I enjoy it myself. Chappelle's Show follows an almost identical format to that of Mr. Show. It's the racially charged spiritually successor to Mr. Show, and where Mr. Show stumbled in ratings, Chappelle's Show excels. Why? Because now is the time for that kind of comedy, for that kind of show. I really can't explain it. Just look at Seinfeld. The show was on for two and a half years before anyone knew it existed.
Anyway, enough rambling. All that to say this: Bob Odenkirk, whom I consider to be a comic genius, is the executive producer of Tom Goes to the Mayor. He didn't create the show, but he wrote alot of the episodes, and probably exercises some creative muscle with the shows direction. So I say give Tom Goes to the Mayor some time. It may be two years, it may be ten before it finds its audience. I for one will keep watching until then.
As a side note, everyone should check out what
David Cross (one time partner and cohort of Bob Odenkirk in Mr. Show) is doing these days!
