You can tell it's a comic adaptation because it slows down every time the shot replicates a panel. It's like trying to read a moving comic. What could possibly suck about your comic moving around while you're trying to read?

You may have noticed that people like

People who have read the book, people who want thought provoking cinema make up less than 10% of the ticket sales.
They have to sell this to the crowd that paid for 300.

Now wait a second... I don't know jack sh*t about Watchmen. Shouldn't I be part of that larger demographic that they're trying to appeal to?
If anything, the Watchmen trailers seem geared towards fans -- the people who already know and recognize these characters. Or is some random egg spaceship coming out of the water supposed to make me go "ooh I'm totally buying a ticket to this"?

I'd agree with this. I think it looks cool and appreciate what's being referenced, but I'm not sure if the average moviegoer thinks it looks good or retarded.

Is the '300' guy directing this?
*realizes that it probably is*
All I'm saying is that they're relying a lot on iconography for a property nobody knows anything about. Like, you can show a shot of the USS Enterprise in your movie trailer and everyone will be like "ah, Star Trek" and they'll have an idea of what the movie is going to be. Here, it's just totally random stuff -- and as someone who doesn't know this story, I don't think it adds up to anything interesting. Even on a "cool shots" level.

But I fully admit that's a cultural thing on my end. I don't get. And I can't see the Chairman of Kitchen Stadium as a cop. It's weird and it ruins my illusion that Kitchen Stadium wasn't a real thing the Japanese did because they're nuts and have an eccentric billionaire*, and was instead just a really neat premise for a tv show.
And, Pete, if you don't mind being my guinea pig, I'd love to get the reaction of the Watchmen movie from someone who has geek cred, but who hasn't read the comic, yet. And the the reaction to the comic by someone who had only previously seen the movie...you know, for science.

I can't buy into the premise to start with, so it's a tough sell. I don't know. There's just a wall between me and anime in general. I saw a little of the live action movie, because I do kinda dig the live action original stuff that Viz Pictures puts out - the odd, quirky rom-coms and stuff...but this was still too not my cup of tea.

OK so you are reacting to the Anime primarily. It's good as far as Anime series go but the movie is much better.
As for the premise - its no worse than the premise of some kid being bitten by a radio active spider or Big Naked Blue dork guy killing off the Viet Cong. (see I'm staying on topic)
But the character psychology that builds off that premise is what's interesting.
Light's Move towards evil was infinitely more believable than say Peter Parker's in SM3 or Aniken's in SW3.
and LOL to Viz's Rom-Coms - did you like Love/com?

My problem with anime is its (seemingly inherent) coldness. It's beautiful to look at but not emotionally engaging for me. Perhaps that's a function of the technically precise Japanese style.
Although, maybe I just haven't seen enough anime.

I would love that, really. To be moved by an anime film, that is. I find it a terrible shame that such beautiful animation (a medium I am quite passionate about) is so often used to such little emotional effect. There's such potential there. And it's not like Japanese cinema doesn't have the capability.

I think the difference is that geek-leaning audiences are used to Batman having a voice. But no one's ever "heard" Rorschach speak before, and I think very few people imagined demon scratchy voice Rorschach in their head as they read.
But since you've never read the book, you've got nothing stopping you from saying, "Oh, Rorschach has a scratchy voice. Sure thing."
I suspect, Pete, that you will like the film much more than many other geeks will as a result of going in as blind as you are.
I am predicting much angst as a result of this movie.
Lord Madhammer
Nov 14 2008, 10:48 PM
I understand how that goes, though. I was highly critical of Lord of the Rings -- or at least I was ready to be -- because I'd read the book for 20 years prior to the films coming out. I had my Sam and my Frodo and my Gandalf and everyone else all in my head, and dangit, I didn't want that to be messed with. Fortunately, Peter Jackson mostly did a great job with the
movies.

This is the first I've been in this thread.
My wife and I saw Quantum of Solace tonight, and a new Watchmen trailer before it. Even after seeing something with a better explanation, my immediate thought was, "This is so not going to do well at the box office." There's just...no way I see this film connecting to casual film goers.
I have Watchmen on my computer (someone gave it to me) but I have yet to read it.
