Dante 01 & Fun On Earth

Dante 01 sounds interesting, but I think that, for this kind of film and it's setting, Event Horizon has already done a MUCH better job.

Dance Of The Dead

This movie is Hilarious!

This weekend ENI brings you the Screamfest closer - MARTYRS which, to be frank I am a little scared to see... early reviews explain the tone of this as "Hostel" meets "No Country For Old Men" and with an ending that just kills the audience....

We also have Keepsake coming up.

And interviews with Toby Wilkins, Director of SPLINTER and hopefully more!

QUOTE
An accident on a deserted highway leaves Janine stranded on the side of the road waiting for help. When “Earl” shows up in his beat-up tow truck she instinctually feels something is not quite right. But it’s not until she wakes up restrained in a barn cellar that she realizes how not right he is. Janine is disciplined, tortured and forced to watch the mutilations of other victims as Earl builds his ideal Frankenstein family from the “best parts” of each girl he meets. He gives her thirty days to become part of the family, or become parts for the family.
Thing are not always what they seem in this game of cat and mouse...

ENI still has reviews for Martyrs coming up (just watching it nearly broke my brain), as well as BogeyMan 3, and an Interview with SPLINTER Director: Toby Wilkins

Martyrs!

The little film from France that broke my brain....

Last week I watched some 7+ films as part of Hollywood's Screamfest festival. I have full reviews up here for all of the films reviewed with more to come...

Although I saw many great films (I recommend Dance of the Dead, and Acolytes above all) there was one that really struck me. Martyrs takes the concept of the "torture porn" genre and elevates it, but to what, I'm not quite sure. It's been almost a week since I saw the film, and I just can't shake it.

One thing that really struck me while watching what seemed like an endless stream of horror films, of all styles and from all types of creators, was the continual mysogenistic thematic that seems to permeate the genre. In a way, I think TEETH (reviewed here at doorq earlier) is a very good representation of the baser aspects of the genre. By and large, the horror genre is about violence being perpetrated on women or the fear of femininty (check my review of the shorts program. Filled to the brim with "fear of the woman"). On the surface, Martyrs is no different. And yet, it seems to ellevate the whole conflict up a notch, making it more terrible and yet more palatible at the same time.

The other thing about Martyrs is that the entire film hinges on a lesbian romance (This is not a spoiler perse). But the strengths that the main character embraces, and the mistakes that she makes are in part empowered by her love for best friend.

They're just a more extreme version of regular Hollywood movies. Shrug.gif

Actually I think Madhammer put it better in the shoutbox:

LMH: Aren't horror movies really just fantasy films? f*cking and killing become indistinguishable
I mean, you never see horror movies where the killer uses a gun. It's always a knife or something wang.png -like

Hunter Rose: So you think horror films speak to a sexual desire?

LMH - They're definitely highly sexualized, they play off the same kind of tension
Although I'm specifically referring to slasher films, not the genuinely creepy sh*t that doesn't involves lots of boobs - but even that makes sense, they only show boobs and not beav b/c the sexual act is depicted in the killing itself.

I think the shower scene in Psycho is the quintessential example. The way it plays, it may as well be a pr0n.

come to think of it, these movies are probably *unsolicited interaction* fantasies

Let The Right One In

Perhaps one of the most original and shocking-ly sweet Vampire movie made in a long long time!

Absolutely beautiful! And Highly recommended!

This was playing at Screamfest but I missed it there - Luckily it's in a theatrical release now and I was able to catch it. You should too!
