Martyrs!
The little film from France that broke my brain....
Last week I watched some 7+ films as part of Hollywood's Screamfest festival. I have full reviews up here for all of the films reviewed with more to come...
Although I saw many great films (I recommend Dance of the Dead, and Acolytes above all) there was one that really struck me. Martyrs takes the concept of the "torture porn" genre and elevates it, but to what, I'm not quite sure. It's been almost a week since I saw the film, and I just can't shake it.
One thing that really struck me while watching what seemed like an endless stream of horror films, of all styles and from all types of creators, was the continual mysogenistic thematic that seems to permeate the genre. In a way, I think TEETH (reviewed here at doorq earlier) is a very good representation of the baser aspects of the genre. By and large, the horror genre is about violence being perpetrated on women or the fear of femininty (check my review of the shorts program. Filled to the brim with "fear of the woman"). On the surface, Martyrs is no different. And yet, it seems to ellevate the whole conflict up a notch, making it more terrible and yet more palatible at the same time.
The other thing about Martyrs is that the entire film hinges on a lesbian romance (This is not a spoiler perse). But the strengths that the main character embraces, and the mistakes that she makes are in part empowered by her love for best friend.
