Review: PCC Steelshot Figure

Continuing with our spotlight of the repainted Power Core Combiner figures, we take a look at Steelshot. Previously, this mold was Bombshock, part of a 5 piece set. Now, Steelshot makes do with a repaint of Searchlight's minicon. We know 2pk commanders fare well when used as a combiner, but how do 5pk commanders do with just a minicon? You'll find answers here.

cool repaint. I actually LIKE Bombshock's mold and like these colors better, PLUS i REALLY wanted that minicon (especially now in, not see through, red) so this repaint makes sense to me. Great job again Hasbro (and Blitz lol)!

Yeah I was wondering how they were going to tackle that "armor-mode" issue when I first heard that the Drone Commanders were going to be repainted as Mini-Con Commanders. Skyburst(Darkstream), Double-Clutch(yet to be announced), Mudslinger(Salvage) are the same way. Although, with the right Mini-con this wouldn't be a problem. If the Mini-con's armor-mode was a shoulder cannon or a jetpack or set of wings that might work. But since they are repainting the Mini-cons as well I think we're out of luck on that. I guess the Has design team didn't anticipate the Mini-con's being placed onto the Drone Commanders even though the Mini-con Commanders have a Drone Commander mode. It's not like the drone arms are sloted for hands either. HOWEVER, Almost every drone released thus far has a peg mount for the weapon mode, usually on the side of the shoulder or the knee. For this being a movie sub-series I think that we are getting roughly the quality we should expect out of these things.

Oddly enough, all super-stores here in North AL are only selling the first four Drone Commanders, the first three Mini-Con Commanders, and the REPAINTS of the first two Drone Commanders Bombshock (Steelshot) and Skyburst (Darkstream), along with a Mini-Con Commander repaint of Searchlight (Windburn). BOO. I would've expected to see the second wave (Leadfoot, Icepick, and Sledge) before the third lol. Go figure. :redface

Back when that minicon was first released I thought it looked like a Nimrod Sentinel from X-Men. This new color scheme only reinforces that impression. It looks good.

If you're wondering why Beacon is bright red, well, look back at the review for Windburn and the bright red on his figure. The two toys, redecos of the Searchlight set, were probably produced on the same - sprue? Line? - and redistributed. (EDIT: Then again, the only red on Windburn to be carried over to Beacon is the former light piping of the eyes, which was clear green for Searchlight...)

Meanwhile, of the redecos, I'm only interested in Steelshot for some reason, and plan to get Crankcase. I finally gave up on trying to find Wave 2 figures Sledge and Leadfoot and ordered them online...

I scored this guy cheap on Ebay, waiting for it to show up. I really liked the color scheme shown on the card art though, with the tan being more of a mustardy color and the brown being a sort of bronze. Im of the opinion that blue shouldnt be anywhere near anything thats any shade of brown or tan...the way the limb connectors stick out like sore thumbs on this really reinforces that. But it looks like a good mold.
