Not going to argue that it's a good figure, but it looks closer than the classics figure. Same alt mode, same transformation scheme. Generally the same paint scheme as well, just the paint shades are brighter and more toy-like.

Energon Swoop's color scheme is less accurate, but otherwise pretty close.

I try not to let which line a toy is in to force me to decide on whether it's a G1 update or not, just because a label should not void out the spirit of it.

That's how I feel about it.

To pretend all of the repaints of Cybertron molds in Universe are G1 updates because they've been given a new name and paint scheme but disregard others as not G1 updates because they're not in Universe seems arbitrary.

You've left out G1 Pretenders / Legends Grimlock which seems more closer to the Classics figure. GrimlockLegends_toy.jpg (only difference really is, the head become feet, and the transformation is slightly more complex.)

I agree, classics Grimlock is NOT the best example on this one ... However for my G1 layout, I use my Masterpiece Grimlock who brings shame to both Classics and Energon Grimlock (Those 2 shouldn't even be allowed the name Grimlock compared to the MP haha). Although Tarron, nice find! Pretenders Grimlock does look alot like Classics, so I can't be too harsh on that one :tflaugh

As for Swoop, Animated has got the head pretty close to the original, the chest is fairly similar and still has some sort of "shoulder spike", whereas the Energon mold has got much more of a jet look to him with flat shoulders. Although I will give you this, the bulky build and legs from Energon Swoop are much more accurate the Animated's. With me, heads sculpts are EXTREMELY important and so it's easier for me to accept a skinny Swoop over one that looks more like a Seeker then a Dinobot. But those are just fillers until I can get a proper Swoop, because I don't think either one are truly close enough to the original to be called an update, they're just different versions.

I was just using Hoist as an example as he came up earlier in the thread.

And please let me be clear here:

I am not trying to force my will upon anyone. This is not an "official" way to "count" anything. Everyone is free to view any figure in anyway you see fit. Copy, paste and alter the list as you desire, doesnt bother me. I was bored one afternoon and just thought, hey! Ima make a list. And somehow it exploded to include lots of other stuff, not just CHUD.

No worries one bit! you did an awesome job getting that list together! If anything look at things this way ... all the debate going on, is everyone's way of mentally modifying their own list to include things that they think may or may not be relevent. I don't think anyone is really trying to put all the weight on you to make this a 100% complete and "official" list. I know I'm just liking the debate that's going on with different characters and seeing everyone's point of view. :tfgrin

Its cool bro, I saw those pics you put up and I have to admit, I kind of want that Energon Grimlock. I wonder why people hate it and Swoop so much?

Edit: I looked him up and Energon Grimlock has appeared in official fiction under Timelines. Simon Furman also revealed how he would've been in the Energon comics had Dreamwave not gone bankrupt.

In fairness, the pics weren't mine so I can't take credit. But don't get me wrong guys, I'm not hating on Energon Grimlock/Swoop. I need to find them because they do look good. I was just comparing them to G1 since that was the topic. As stand alone figures they seem pretty decent. Swoop I think gets hated on because of his alt mode, it is very jet looking. Plus it's the Dinbots we're talking about, if it's not perfect, most people hate it haha.

Edit: I would've loved to have seen the Energon Grimlock in action!!!!

This is a G1 list. Granted Beast Wars is a part of G1 but thats not the focus of this list. Even if they were included I would only have to add like 2 other figures. This list is based purely off of characters in the G1 cartoon only. So that rites out BW/BM/RiD/comic characters, etc.

Actually, these are the following Beast Wars characters who are direct 'continuations' of G1 characters (i.e. they are G1 characters who were reformatted during the Beast Wars)

+ Ravage. So the X-9 Metals toy should count. Also, Binaltech Ravage also counts because he's Beast Wars Ravage from a parallel Beast Wars future who travelled back to the G1-Binaltech time and had himself reformatted as a Binaltech Transformer, then captured his original self in cassette-tape mode and trapped his old self inside his vehicle-mode tape deck! Alternators Ravage is presumably G1-era Ravage himself rebuilt as an Alternator (hard to verify since Hasbro never bothered to write fiction for Alternators; but I'm making this assumption based on the fact that he's quadrapedal unlike BT Ravage who's bipedal (like his Beast Wars upgrade))

+ Grimlock

+ Ironhide

+ Silverbolt (the eagle, not the Fuzor)

+ Prowl (the lion)

+ Prowl II. This character appeared in The Headmasters stationed at Autobot City under Ultra Magnus' command. He is a clone of Prowl programmed who contains the mind of Chip Chase merged with the original Prowl's memories. He appeared in Beast Wars as a Transmetal 2 owl. Chip Chase is a character who originated from the G1 cartoon, so that's gotta tie him in.

+ Optimus Prime: Convobat's tech specs explicitly states that he is an upgrade of G1 Optimus Prime. You also forgot to include Alternity Convoy (which I reckon should count if you're going to include Alternators/Binaltech)

+ Megatron: Megalligator's tech specs explicitly states that he is an upgrade of G1 Megatron. Also need to include Alternity Megatron.

Other suggestions for inclusion on the list:

+ Streetwise: BotCon "Streetstar" is meant to be Streetwise, despite the stupid name (which even the BotCon comic pokes fun at)

+ Alternity: Cliffjumper, Bumblebee, Starscream, Thundercracker, Skywarp and Ultra Magnus

Other comments:

* Here is a list of all G1 Hot Rod/Rodimus toys.

* I agree that the Energon Dinobots shouldn't count because they're NOT continuations of the G1 characters. Also, that comparison pic above with Swoop is flawed because that's not a real G1 Swoop. It's either a Diaclone, custom or KO. The original Swoop is red chested (just as he is in the G1 comics too - for some reason the cartoon used his Diaclone colours).

* Hauler counts. Even before the eHobby toy came along, Hauler was widely accepted by fans as an individual character who is NOT Grapple. In the G1 cartoon, Hauler's vehicle mode is slightly different from Grapple's (mostly the front cab section). Hauler is most likely a prototype name for Grapple and for some reason the animators drew him a bit differently from the Diaclone crane toy that eventually became Grapple. Despite his brief appearance in More Than Meets The Eye, he IS a G1 toon character proper. He had a longer appearance than Sunstorm!

* Octane was only called Tankor in Universe. The Henkei toy is called Octane (well, "Octone" to be precise, which is the original Japanese name for Octane in G1 (like how Optimus Prime is Convoy)).

Are you only counting G1 episodes that aired in the US? I'm wondering if the G1 Pretenders were ever on episodes in other countries, thus making Generations Skullgrin applicable for this list. (Maybe he's already on there and I didn't see him...)

Skullgrin doesn't count as an upgrade of Dauros, because Dauros and Skullgrin are totally DIFFERENT characters, even though the G1 toys are the same. I know Dauros was called Skullgrin in those stupid awful English dubs, but of course, those dubs referred to Ginrai as Optimus Prime which is completely false and misleading. Generations Skullgrin is an upgrade of Skullgrin, and Skullgrin never appeared in the cartoon. Dauros has, but not Skullgrin.

Energon Grimlock and Swoop are CRAP toys to say the least. Their engineering is abysmally pedestrian and to make matters worse, their fist holes don't support the 5mm post hole size that the majority of Unicron Trilogy toys have. One of the cool things with Unicron Trilogy toys was that most of them supported the 'universal' 5mm post, allowing most of the toys to be cross-compatible with weapons and accessories. So the Energon Dinobots can't wield the Mini-Con Star Sabre or any other weapon from UT... and they don't come with any weapons of their own. If you really want these toys, make sure you get them CHEAP. Do _not_ pay full retail price for them as I did... boy did I feel ripped off.

Im not including Beast Wars as I said before. The list is based off of characters who appeared in the G1 toon only. Not figure updates of them in their beast incarnations. That muddies the water all to hell right there.
